Tirumala Venkateswara Temple (తిరుమల వెంకటేశ్వర స్వామి ఆలయం) is a famous Vedic temple in the hill town of Tirumala, near Tirupati in Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh. It is about 435 kilometers (270 miles)  of the capital of Vijayawada, 138 km (86 miles)  Chennai and 291 km (181 miles)  in the state Bangalore.


The Tirumala Hill is 853m above sea level and approximately 10.33 square miles (27 km2) in the region. It consists of seven peaks, representing the seven heads of Adisesha, earning the name Seshachalam. The seven peaks are called Seshadri, Neeladri, Garudadri, Anjanadri, Vrushabhadri, Narayanadri and Venkatadri. The temple is Venkatadri (also known as Venkatachala or Venkata Hill), the seventh season, and is also known as the "Temple of the Seven Hills." The deity of the temple is Lord Venkateswara, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Venkateswara is known by other names :. Balaji, Govinda and Srinivasa [5] the temple is located on the south bank of Sri Swami Pushkarini, holy water tank. the temple complex has a traditional building of the temple, with a number of modern queue and places of accommodation for pilgrims.

 and the most visited place of worship in the world. The temple is visited by about 50 000 to 100 000 faithful per day (30 to 40 million people per year on average), while for special occasions and festivals such as the annual Brahmotsavam the number 500,000 pilgrims shot, making it the most visited shrine in the world.

There are several legends associated with the manifestation of the Lord in Tirumala. According to legend, the temple has a murti (deity) of Lord Venkateswara, believed to stay there for the duration of the Kali Yuga.
Etymology
Tirumala: Tiru means means "holy" or "sacred" and low hills / mountains in the Tamil language. Therefore, it is translated as sacred mountains.
Venkateswara: In Sanskrit, Ven-kata-Eswara means this: "VEM = all ties with his sins, 'kata' = is cut to the total paid to him, 'Eswara' = supreme God.
Temple History
Medieval History
The Pallavas of Kanchipuram (9 century AD), the Cholas of Thanjavur (10th century) and Vijayanagara Pradhans (14th and 15th centuries) were committed devotees of Lord Venkateswara. During the invasion of Srirangam by Malik Kafur in 1310-1311 AD, the Ranga Mandapam of the temple served as a refuge for the presiding deity in Srirangam Ranganatha Swamy. Later, under the reign of the Vijayanagara emperors, when the temple was won over its wealth and its current size, with the gift of diamonds and gold.  In 1517 Vijayanagara Sri Krishna Deva Raya rule, in one of his many visits to the temple, donated gold and jewels, which Vimana (inner shrine) roofing brown. Statues of Sri Krishna Deva Raya and his wife are in the temple premises. After the fall of the Vijayanagara Empire, the United kings such as Mysore and Gadwal worshiped as pilgrims and gave ornaments and valuables in the temple. Maratha general Raghoji me Bhonsle (died 1755) visited the temple and established a permanent administration for the conduct of worship in the temple.  It is a Raja Todar Mal idol who was the Minister of Revenue Akbar, greeting pilgrims in the temple premises.
Modern history
In 1843, with the arrival of the Madras Presidency, the administration of Sri Venkateswara Temple and several shrines was entrusted to Seva Dossji Hathiramji Mutt in Tirumala Vicaranakarta that nearly a century until the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) was created following TTD Act in 1932.

After the independence of the state of Andhra was established for linguistic reasons, in Tirupati had and still has a majority of the population speaks Telugu was awarded by Govt. India, incorporating within Andhra.

Temple today
TTD is managed by a board of directors that has increased in size from five (1951) to fifteen (1987) by adopting laws. Operation and daily management of TTD is the responsibility of an Executive Director appointed by the Government of Andhra Pradesh.

The temple attracts about 75,000 pilgrims every day.  estimated at 10 million rupees in 2008, the annual budget is running charities whose funds come from the budget and faithful donations. The popularity of the temple can be judged by its annual budget. The annual income is estimated at 10 billion rupees in 2008. Most of its revenue comes from donations SriVari Hundi. Civet controversy
