After appearing in a supporting role in the 1999 film Tamil Jodi, she had her first lead role in the 2002 movie Mounam Pesiyadhe. Later, she saw the glory featured in blockbuster movies, Saamy (2003) and Ghilli (2004) in Tamil cinema and Varsham (2004) Telugu cinema, for which she won her first award for South Filmfare best Actress. She won the award twice for Nuvvostanante Nenoddantana (2005) and Aadavari Matalaku Ardhalu Verule (2007). In 2010, she made her Bollywood debut in Khatta Meetha.  They saw in her career best performance Abhiyum Naanum (2008) and Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa (2010) for which she won the heroin Vijay favorite and was nominated for Filmfare Best Tamil Actress.

Trisha Krishnan and Uma was born in Chennai (then known as Madras) in a Tamil Iyer family, whose ancestors came from the region of Kerala Palakkad.
